DRINK MORE WATER!
The Logistics
Drinking 30 to 50 ounces of water daily is a crucial aspect in protecting the functionality of body systems including the heart and brain. Additionally water flushes bacteria from the bladder, carries nutrients to cells, and prevents constipation. Why wouldn’t you drink water?
As we age hydration becomes even more crucial. Studies have proven that adults have a diminished sense of thirst compared to their younger counterparts. Why adults may not appear to be as thirsty, they still must continue drinking water as it is a fundamental aspect of being a healthy individual.
Improved hydration can be accomplished through eating water dense foods such as salads, fruits, and applesauce. It is important to remember water dense foods are not the key to hydration but an additional tool. Water remains the most important tool in the effort to stay hydrated.
After a Workout
Sports drinks are also a tool to aid in hydration. Sports drinks may seem like a great alternative to water although they often contain large amounts of added sugar. Next time you are shopping for sports drinks look for a low sugar alternative or add water to your normal sports drinks to dilute the sweetness.
Helpful Hint
Adding cucumbers, lemon, or orange slices to water adds taste which may act as an incentive to drink more of it. Want to get fancier? Add a little mint!!!
